In case you didn’t put in on your calendar, today is National Watermelon Day. Since much of the US is sweltering with high temperatures, we want to offer a recipe for watermelon iced tea. As with all iced tea, start with a good, black tea. If it is a poor quality black tea, it will be an underwhelming iced tea.
First, make a pitcher of iced tea. We have offered several different iced tea recipes over time and here is an easy one. In only a few minutes, you can make 1 quart of iced tea with 4 Tea Bags. For watermelon iced tea, it is best to use mild, black tea. To start, get these ingredients
4 Tea Bags
2 cups boiled water
3 teaspoons of lemon juice
2 cups cold water
sweeten to taste
lemon slices and mint
Begin by boiling 2 cups of water and then adding the 4 teabags. Then, allow the tea to steep for 3 to 4 minutes. Discard the tea bags. Pour the tea in pitcher and cool. Next, add the 2 cups of cold water. Chill.
Next, make watermelon juice. Add watermelon cubes to a blender and puree until you get a juice consistency.
Now simply add the watermelon juice to the iced tea maker. Start with a small amount and slowly add more until you get the desired flavor. Add the lemon juice and the amount of sweetener you prefer. Stir to dissolve. Pour over ice and, if desired, garnish with lemon slices and fresh mint leaves.
