The research was reported in Periodontology, the official publication of the American Academy of Periodontology. Yoshihiro Shimazaki of Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan authored the study.

Researchers studied 940 men between the ages of 49 and 59.

Catechin, the antioxidant in green tea, is believed to be the substance helping to make teeth and gums healthier.
