What does Typhoo mean?

In the distinctive red box, Typhoo Tea is one of the most popular and recognizable brands in the world. But, few people know how the name originated and what it means.

John Sumner was a grocer in Birmingham, England.   He created the company and came up with the name.    Typhoo is, in part, pronunciation of the Chinese word for Doctor.  Originally, the name was Typhoo Tipps (the world was misspelled but remained on the package for years).

Also, the brand name really appears as Ty.phoo.
